hotel taxes may appear on ballot in Castro Valley
CASTRO VALLEY -- Castro Valley voters may be seeing double Nov. 5 -- they might spot two hotel occupancy taxes on their ballots. But that doesn't mean local hotels will actually tax customers twice. One tax would apply if Castro Valley becomes a city, the other would apply if it doesn't. Alameda County may seek a countywide vote to authorize a new tax on the 10 hotels and motels in unincorporated Ashland, Castro Valley and Cherryland, county Supervisor Nate Miley said Tuesday. The tax could raise $700,000 for county coffers, Miley told 90 people during a Castro Valley Rotary Club luncheon -- but only if Castro Valley doesn't incorporate.
