MEALS-ON-WHEELS
SOS/Meals
on Wheels (Service Opportunity for Seniors, Inc.) has been serving Homebound
Seniors in Alameda County since 1966.
Today we serve the cities of Hayward, Castro
Valley, San Leandro and San Lorenzo.
We are serving approximately 550+ meals
a day to the homebound that are over 60 years of age, that cannot cook
for themselves.
ELIGIBILITY
-
SOS/Meals on Wheels serves senior residents,
60 and older who are unable to shop for food or prepare meals for themselves.
-
Clients may live alone or live with family
members who are at work during the daytime.
-
A donation (from $1.50 to $4.25 per meal)
is suggested, according to income.
-
For weekend and holidays, frozen meals are
provided as needed
-
A private interview with the client and/or
family is arranged to ascertain needs and charge for service.
SERVICE
PROVIDED
-
Hot meals are delivered weekdays to residents
around the noon hour. Frozen meals are available for Sunday and holidays,
and bag lunches are available for Saturdays.
-
Meals are nutritionally balanced, and are
low-salt.
WHY
DO WE SERVE?
-
To help shut-ins maintain their independence
in their own homes.
-
To help elderly and handicapped residents
cope with isolation and loneliness.
-
To help families who must work and provide
for the needs or their homebound family members.
-
To help seniors and their families avoid premature,
costly nursing home care.
-
To help eliminate the problem of inadequate
diet for those who cannot afford good nutrition.
Volunteers
and Donations Are Welcome!
This program relies on the generosity of
donors giving their time or financial assistance to pay for the meal costs
of low-income shut-ins in the community. (Click
