What is the SAFE Ashland Neighborhood Organization?
MISSION
The Safe Ashland Neighborhood Organization
is a collaboration of Ashland residents, business owners, social service
agencies, property managers, schools, and county departments committed
to improve the quality of life in Ashland.
GOALS
Identify
and implement crime prevention activities for Ashland.
Involve Ashland
community members and institutions in the planning and implementation of
these activities.
Build a track
record of collaboration among key Ashland community members and institutions
in crime prevention and reduction activities to be competitive for funding
opportunities.

Health Collaborative
Meets every 3rd Wednesday from 11:30
to 12:30

Ashland Neighborhood
Preservation and Improvement Committee
This committee focuses on addressing a
community concern to preserve properties in Ashland that benefit the residents
because of their usefulness, beauty or historical significance and improve
the appearance, safety and value of other properties that the community
feels need assistance. The committee is developing a coordinated approach
to work with property owners, public agencies and other residents to clean
up streets such as 165th Avenue and develop Neighborhood Pride. Meetings
take place on the 1st Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30 at the
community room of Eden House Apartments (1601 165th Avenue)
Property Manager's
Association
In response to a large presence of apartment
complexes, an Association for managers and owners of multi-unit properties,
offers a forum for information sharing and problem solving. It provides
a unified voice to property managers and a means to organize themselves
and their residents to participate in apartment watch efforts and the general
improvement of their properties. The Property Managers Association has
a luncheon 4 times a year. The upcoming dates will be announced. Call SAFE

Steering and
Fundraising Committees
Develops the agenda for the general monthly
meetings, coordinates outreach, and oversees the process for
grant applications and fundraising. Two
persons from each standing committee plus one representative from
Ashland I Cherryland Merchant's
association, the Ashland Community Association, the Sheriff's Department,
San Lorenzo Unified School District, Alameda
County Housing & Community Development, Hayward Park and
Recreation District, and Mercy Housing
make up the Steering Committee. Meetings take place on the 2nd
Thursday of every month from 5:30 to
7:00 at Bermuda Gardens Apartments (1475 167th Avenue). The
Fundraising Committee meets
immediately before the Steering from 4:30 to 5:30.
History
In response to an individual
and community concern for increasing the broadly defined "Safety" of the
Ashland Area, Mercy Services along with Alameda County Housing and Community
Department created the SAFE Ashland Neighborhood Organization. Since September
1998, members of the committee have met once a month to identify Issues
and priorities for the Ashland area and develop a cohesive plan
to address them.
To date, SAFE Ashland has identified increasing childcare programs as well as improving residential and commercial properties in Ashland as Its two top priorities. Subcommittees dedicated to each Issue are currently taking action to achievepositive results towards increasing child care activities; promoting neighborhood pride; beautification; and safety.
MEMBERSHIP
The intent of the SAFE Ashland
Neighborhood is to encourage
diverse community participation from homeowners, tenants, property managers,
property owners and merchants to work in an outcome driven manner toimprove
conditions in the Ashland area. Membership Is free and meetings
are open to the public.
The majority of the committees 250+ members represent persons who live, work or own property in the Ashland area. welcome anyone interested in the work of the committee to attend our next General Meeting!
GENERAL
MEETINGS
General meetings take place
on the 3rd Thursday of every other month starting in January 2000 from
5:30 -7:00 p.m. At the meeting
you will hear reports on the work of our sub-committees, general and individual
announcements about upcoming events or community concerns and special presentations
on topics of interest to committee members. To be notified about upcoming
meetings please fill out and return the attached form.
